Teaser Tuesdays: 3 This Week

Gerard's:

The blasts ripped through the noisy gym.  A hush fell, and for an instant, wide-eyed students turned to stare at one another.
From page 8 of The Competition by Marcia Clark.

Karen's:

Benoit's daughter from a short second marriage, Isabelle Renee Benoit, similarly died young, giving fuel to the legend that Benoit labored under a lifelong curse, placed on the family when a slave midwife was forced to leave her own daughter to labor through a deadly breech birth alone so that the midwife could attend to a birth in the Benoit home.  After a long illness and rumored bouts of mental instability, Girard Benoit left his fortune to his household help, rather than to extended family members, in a much-rumored effort to protect them from the curse and thus ransom himself in death.

From page 222, (Loc. 2963 on Kindle)  of The Prayer Box by Lisa Wingate.

When I'm in a particularly negative mood, three thoughts come to me with those phrases:  Faith can be work.  Love can be labor.  Hope can get long.
From page 20 of Children of the Day by Beth Moore.

Another Great Dog Book--"Travels with Casey" by Benoit Denizet-Lewis

Abby (our dog) dreams of traveling like this.
Travels With Casey by Benoit Denizet-Lewis tells the true story of the author who takes his dog, Casey, around the country in a RV for four months!  I enjoyed the parts with Casey, a great dog, but I really appreciated all the people that he met and their dogs as well.  This is very interesting.  If you own a dog, you can easily relate to this book.  I enjoyed it a lot and was sort of bummed that it had to end.
(Gerard's review, 5++ stars)

"The Stone Boy" by Sophie Loubiere Was Confusing To Me

I'd skip this one if I were you!
The Stone Boy by Sophie Loubiere is about an older lady who lives alone.  When she moves into a new neighborhood, she notices a little boy next door that is being neglected and hurt.  The problem is, nobody else sees this boy.  The premise was good; however, for most of the book, I was totally lost!  Near the end, the picture became clearer. I guess I just did not get it.

Tuesday Teasers - Three This Week

Gerard's:

Dogs presumably don't put on fake smiles, but they do send out hundreds of subtle signals that we often miss.  Amanda has become an expert over the years at judging a dog's mood, and she'll stop a studio session if she senses that a dog is anxious or uncomfortable.
From page 40 of Travels With Casey--My Journey Through Our Dog-Crazy Country by Benoit Denizet-Lewis.  (Non-fiction)

We cannot allow not only a great many adults, but their children, too, to be subjected to such danger.  As the headmistress of a school, I know certain parents who are in thrall to this gentleman, and who swear by him and him alone to head their families.

From page 15 of The Stone Boy by Sophie Loubiere. (Review up Wednesday.)

Karen's:

The real grenades felt unexpectedly heavy.  Her drill sergeant told her she would blow herself up if she made a mistake, which made her clumsy with terror, but as she leaned against a wall clutching two grenades against her chest, a trainer standing beside her asked where she was from, and when she said Indiana, he brought up Bobby Knight.

From page 19  of Soldier Girls by Helen Thorpe.
